How do I get my dog ready for boarding?

To get your dog ready for boarding, you can do the following: 

  • Board your dog for a one day trial period
  • Get your dog used to sleeping alone before boarding
  • Get your dog’s vaccinations up to date

What is wellness dog care?

Wellness dog care refers to preventative care your dog receives. There are wellness plans available with pet insurance that you will be reimbursed for your pet’s vet costs if they are covered in the plan. Wellness insurance plans can be very beneficial since they make paying for important wellness care like heartworm testing and vaccinations more affordable. What does a wellness exam consist of for dogs in Raleigh?

The wellness examination should be quite thorough in order to preserve the health of your dog. Your veterinarian should inquire about your dog's diet, exercise, thirst, breathing, behavior, habits, elimination patterns (such as bowel movements and urination), lifestyle, and general health during a routine wellness examination. Some of the more common aspects of this exam include:

  • The general physical condition of your dog, ie does your dog have an appropriate body weight
  • Check your dog's muscles for any signs of muscle wasting.
  • How your dog stands and moves around.
  • If your dog is observant and bright.
  • The coat will be looked over for any abnormal hair loss, excessive shedding, dandruff, dryness, or oiliness.
  • Your dog will be checked for lumps or bumps, and areas of abnormal thickening, etc. on the skin.
  • The eyes will be observed for abnormalities like redness, discharge, excessive tearing, lumps or bumps on the eyelids, how tightly the eyelids close, cloudiness, or any other symptoms.
  • Examine the ears for any signs of issues, such as discharges, thickening, hair loss, or other changes.

Prior to the wellness examination, your veterinarian will advise collecting a fresh sample of your dog's feces (bowel movement). This sample will be processed and examined under a microscope for parasite eggs. Since many puppies have intestinal parasites, monthly fecal examinations in puppies are crucial. Additionally, your veterinarian will advise heartworm testing on a schedule that is suitable for your area of the country.
